At SAMS our roof creaks when it warms up. The question was, "why does it make that noise?" Miss Hart.
We discussed what the roof is made out of but no one had the anwser to our initial question.
I have now asked students to find out about matter and what happens to a solid object when it heats up. I am looking forward to their answers.

I think it creaks because when a hard object like wood, might have had moisture in it, so when it heats up, it expands with probably makes the creaking noises.

I think the roof creaks because hard object might have obsorbed water or moisture ''such as our roof''and when it heats up it shrinks and makes the creaking noise.

I think the roof creaks because it has obsorbed water or moisture and when it heats up the water evaporates and the rook shrinks and also creaks.

Matter is anything that has mass and volum, Mass is the amount of matter in an object. The mass of an object does not change. It could be because it might have moisture in it but it may be because of the heat is putting presure on the matter or the roof and it is macking it creak and move.
I think that the metal expands in the heat, which makes it creak! I will tell you now it is very annoying!!
Items such as metal expands as it gets warmer. When it expands it's likly to make a creaking sound.
So how’s it now? Did you call your roofing contractor to evaluate the situation? I think you might have thermal expansion and contraction due to different materials not expanding at the same rate. Do you have a shingle or steel roof? Steel will last a life time, but it is prone to rapid expansion and contraction.

Cool question for your students to answer. First of all, if that roof is made out of metal group then that would definitely make a sound. It creaks mainly for different reasons. When two metals collide it makes a screeching sound. It happens when nails or screws are loosening from the roof. Reason why this occurs is because of falling debris that hit the roof, and heavy winds that tries to torn-off the roof.

It's very simple! Metal roofs can create a screeching sound because it's rubbing with screw or nails. This is called friction. It happens when the screw or nail comes loose to heavy wind and fallen debris. It's important to repair it by tightening it again, and adding sealants to prevent water from coming in.
